Multimedia over Coax Alliance

Wired networking through the coaxial cable already in your walls. If your home was wired for cable TV, MoCA turns those coax outlets into a fast, stable backbone — often the best way to get wired-quality links without pulling new Ethernet.

MoCA — named for the Multimedia over Coax Alliance that created it — carries Ethernet networking over the coaxial cable installed in many homes for cable TV. Where powerline uses electrical wiring and an extender uses the air, MoCA uses coax — a shielded, high-quality medium that makes it one of the most reliable ways to extend a wired network without opening walls.

How it works

You place a MoCA adapter at each coax outlet you want to use. One adapter near the router connects to it by Ethernet and bridges the network onto the coax; another adapter in a distant room takes the signal back off the coax and presents an Ethernet port. The coax cabling already running between those rooms becomes your network backbone. Because coax is shielded and was designed to carry high-frequency signals, the result is fast and stable.

Why it usually beats powerline

MoCA and powerline solve the same "wired link without new cable" problem, but MoCA generally wins on quality:

The catch is the requirement: MoCA needs coax outlets where you want connections, which homes wired for cable TV usually have but newer or coax-free homes may not.

Coexistence with cable internet and TV

A common worry is interference, but MoCA is designed to share coax with existing services. It operates at frequencies above those used by cable TV and DOCSIS internet, so all three coexist on the same wiring. To keep your MoCA network contained within the home — both for privacy and performance — you fit a point-of-entry (PoE) filter where the coax enters the building. This reflects the MoCA signal back inside and stops it leaking onto the provider's network.

Where MoCA shines

MoCA is ideal for fixed, bandwidth-hungry devices in rooms a router cannot serve well by Wi-Fi: a smart TV or streaming box, a gaming console that benefits from low, stable latency, or a back-room desktop. It also pairs beautifully with access points — feed a remote access point over MoCA and you get full-speed Wi-Fi in a far part of the house with a rock-solid wired backhaul. In homes already wired for coax, it is frequently the best-value upgrade for whole-home wired coverage.
