Powerline Networking
Internet through your power sockets. Powerline adapters turn a home's electrical wiring into a network cable between rooms — a clever fix when you can't run Ethernet and Wi-Fi won't reach, with performance that depends heavily on your wiring.
Powerline networking carries data over the electrical wiring already in your walls. You use a pair of adapters: one plugs into an outlet near your router and connects to it by Ethernet, and the other plugs into an outlet in a distant room to provide a network connection there. The wiring between the two outlets becomes the data path. It is a way to get a wired link to a room where running an Ethernet cable through walls is impractical and Wi-Fi is too weak.
How it is used
A typical setup looks like this:
- Plug adapter A into a wall outlet beside the router; connect them with an Ethernet cable.
- Plug adapter B into a wall outlet in the target room.
- Connect a device — or an access point — to adapter B by Ethernet.
Many powerline kits include a Wi-Fi access point in the remote adapter, so the distant room gets both a wired port and fresh Wi-Fi fed by the powerline link.
The reality of powerline speed
Powerline boxes advertise eye-catching numbers, but those are theoretical maximums you will not see in practice. Real throughput is much lower and swings widely depending on your home's wiring. As a rough hierarchy: a true Ethernet run is fastest and most consistent; powerline sits in the middle, usually beating a weak Wi-Fi signal in a far room; and a struggling Wi-Fi connection is the floor. Powerline is best understood as "better than bad Wi-Fi, worse than real Ethernet."

Powerline vs MoCA vs Wi-Fi
Powerline is one of several ways to get a wired-quality link without pulling new cable. Its closest cousin is MoCA, which uses your home's coaxial TV cabling instead of electrical wiring and is generally faster and more consistent — a great option in homes already wired for cable TV. Against Wi-Fi, powerline trades the convenience of going wireless for a more stable, lower-interference path, which is why it appeals for fixed devices like a TV, console, or desktop in a hard-to-reach room. Where you can run actual Ethernet, that remains the gold standard.
