Wi-Fi Extender / Repeater

The cheap, plug-in fix for a Wi-Fi dead zone: it grabs your existing signal and rebroadcasts it further. It works — but it almost always trades some speed for that extra reach, which is why it is not always the right tool.

A Wi-Fi extender — also called a repeater — receives your router's existing Wi-Fi signal and retransmits it to push coverage into a weak or dead area. You place it roughly halfway between the router and the dead zone, where it can still hear the router clearly, and it fills the gap beyond. It is the least expensive and simplest way to extend coverage, which is why it is so common — but its method comes with a built-in cost.

The speed penalty

A basic single-radio extender has to do two jobs on the same channel: receive each packet from the router, then resend it to your device. Because it cannot listen and talk at the same instant on one radio, every packet effectively crosses the air twice, roughly halving throughput in the extended area. Dual-band extenders ease this by using one band to communicate with the router and a different band to serve your devices, recovering much of the lost speed. But the fundamental relay nature means an extender rarely matches a direct connection.

When an extender is the right call

An extender makes sense when you have a single weak corner, a tight budget, and no easy way to run a cable. For that one dead spot — a spare room, a patio — a dual-band extender placed carefully can be a perfectly good fix. Where it disappoints is whole-home coverage: chaining extenders, juggling separate network names, and stacking speed penalties leads to a frustrating experience. For that, a mesh system or wired access points are the better investment.

Getting the most from one

Placement is everything. Put the extender where it still receives a strong signal from the router — too far out and it merely rebroadcasts a weak signal, extending the dead zone rather than fixing it. Aim for a spot with a solid link back to the router but close enough to the problem area to cover it. If your extender supports giving its network the same name as the main one (and your devices roam to it cleanly), enable that to avoid manually switching networks as you move.
