Wireless Access Point (AP)
The device that actually broadcasts your Wi-Fi. It is the radio bridge between wireless gadgets and the wired network — a job your router usually does, but one a dedicated unit can do far better in hard-to-cover areas.
A wireless access point (AP) is the device that creates a Wi-Fi network and connects wireless clients to a wired network. When your laptop joins Wi-Fi, it is associating with an access point, which then passes its traffic onto the wired LAN and out to the internet. The access point is purely the radio layer — it does not assign addresses or route between networks, it bridges Wi-Fi devices onto the network that already exists.
Access point vs router
This is the distinction people most often blur, because the typical home "router" is actually several devices in one box.

A home router combines a router, a switch, and an access point. A standalone access point is just that last piece — useful for extending coverage without adding a second router.
Why and where to add one
The classic reason to add a dedicated access point is a coverage gap: a far bedroom, a basement, or a detached office your main router's signal cannot reach cleanly. You run an Ethernet cable from the router to the new location, plug in an access point, and give it the same network name — and suddenly that dead zone has strong Wi-Fi fed by a full-speed wired link. In larger homes and offices, several access points sharing one network provide seamless coverage as you move between them.
Access point vs extender
An access point and a Wi-Fi extender solve the same problem differently. The access point connects to the network over a wired Ethernet backhaul, so it delivers full speed. An extender repeats the signal wirelessly, which usually halves throughput because the single radio must both receive and rebroadcast each packet. Wherever you can run a cable, a wired access point beats a wireless extender on performance — which is also why wired-backhaul mesh systems perform better than wireless-only ones.
Turning a spare router into an access point
You do not always need to buy new hardware. An old router can usually be reconfigured as an access point by switching it to bridge mode (or "AP mode"), which disables its routing and address-handing functions so it only provides Wi-Fi. This avoids the double NAT problems that occur when two routers each try to run the network, and it is a cheap way to extend coverage with equipment you already own.
