What fritz.box Actually Is
fritz.box is not a website out on the public internet — it's a local alias that your AVM Fritz!Box answers to. When you're connected to the Fritz!Box network and type it into a browser, the router intercepts the name and serves its own FRITZ!OS admin page. Behind the scenes it points to the box's IP address, which is 192.168.178.1 by default. Both fritz.box and http://fritz.box work while you're on the network.
How to Open fritz.box
- Connect to the Fritz!Box. Join its Wi-Fi or plug in by Ethernet. You must be on this router's network — not mobile data, not a neighbor's Wi-Fi, not a work VPN.
- Type the address with http://. In the browser address bar, enter
http://fritz.boxand press Enter. Usinghttp://explicitly stops the browser from running a search. - Enter the device password. A Fritz!Box has no username — just the FRITZ!Box password (details below, or the per-unit password on the sticker).
- If it won't load, use the IP. Go to
http://192.168.178.1— it opens the exact same page.
| Field | Default |
|---|---|
| Admin URL | http://fritz.box |
| IP address | 192.168.178.1 |
| Username | None — Fritz!Box uses a device password only |
| Password | The FRITZ!Box-Kennwort on the underside sticker / service card, or set during setup |

Why fritz.box Won't Load — and How to Fix Each Cause
"This site can't be reached" on fritz.box almost always traces to one of these. Work through them in order:
- You're on the wrong network. The single most common cause. Confirm your device is connected to the Fritz!Box's Wi-Fi or cabled to it directly — not mobile data or another access point.
- A VPN is intercepting the name. A VPN can capture DNS and route the lookup away from your router. Disconnect the VPN completely and try again.
- The browser ran a search instead. If you typed just "fritz.box" and got search results, retype it as
http://fritz.boxwith the prefix. - https:// is failing. The box responds on
http://by default. If your browser forces HTTPS, the page may not load — typehttp://explicitly or use the IP address. - The Fritz!Box runs behind another router. In IP-client mode the box gets a new address and the fritz.box name may no longer resolve. Find its current IP in your main router's device list, or use 192.168.178.1 if it's still the gateway.
- Another device claimed the name. If a second router or device on the network also advertises "fritz.box," resolution can break. Fall back to the numeric IP.
- Cached/stale DNS. Try a private/incognito window, or a different browser, to rule out a cached redirect.
- Last resort: factory reset. If you're locked out entirely, reset the box (from the admin page, the phone-dial reset code, or AVM's model-specific method). This restores the default IP and password but erases your settings — see the factory reset guide first.
fritz.box vs. the IP Address — Which Should You Use?
They open the same page. The hostname is easier to remember, but the IP address (192.168.178.1) is more reliable because it skips the local name lookup that VPNs and DNS settings can break. If the hostname ever fails, the IP is your fallback — bookmark it.
Is fritz.box Safe?
Yes — it's AVM's official local address, and it resolves on your own network rather than going out to the public internet. It can't be a phishing page as long as you typed it yourself while connected to your Fritz!Box. Once you're in, keep FRITZ!OS updated and use a strong device password — AVM publishes regular security patches, and an out-of-date box is the main risk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why won't fritz.box load?
Usually because you're not on the Fritz!Box network, a VPN is intercepting the address, the browser searched instead of navigating, or the box runs behind another router. Try http://fritz.box, disconnect any VPN, and if it still fails go to 192.168.178.1 directly.
What is the IP address for fritz.box?
It points to your Fritz!Box's admin IP — 192.168.178.1 by default. Typing the IP opens the same login page.
What's the password for fritz.box?
There's no username — only the FRITZ!Box device password, printed on the underside sticker and the service card, or the one you set during setup. If you've lost it, a factory reset restores the printed default.
Is fritz.box legitimate?
Yes — it's AVM's official local alias for the Fritz!Box admin page. It only works on a Fritz!Box network and resolves locally, so it isn't a public website or a scam.
