Step-by-step login

1. Connect to the gateway's network — Wi-Fi or Ethernet directly to the AT&T gateway, not a second router behind it or a VPN.
2. Open a browser and go to http://192.168.1.254. Use http://, not https. The status pages load without any login.
3. For protected settings (firewall, NAT, IP Passthrough), enter the Device Access Code — the 12-character code printed on the sticker on the side of the gateway.
4. Make changes and save. Wi-Fi name and password live under Home Network; advanced options under Firewall and Settings.

The Device Access Code (this trips people up)

Unlike a typical router, an AT&T gateway has no admin username/password. Most of the interface is viewable freely, but any change to security settings prompts for the Device Access Code — unique per unit, printed on the gateway sticker. There is no generic default like admin/admin, and a factory reset does not change it. If the sticker is missing, AT&T support can provide the code after verifying your account.

Using your own router (IP Passthrough)

You cannot fully remove the AT&T gateway — it authenticates the fiber/DSL line — but you can stop it from double-routing. Enable IP Passthrough (Settings → Firewall → IP Passthrough) and assign it to your own router. This passes the public IP through and avoids double NAT, which otherwise breaks port forwarding and some games. See bridge mode explained for the full picture.

Security: do this after first login

• Change the Wi-Fi password if it is still the printed default or has been shared widely.
• Set Wi-Fi security to WPA3, or WPA2-AES at minimum — see WPA3 vs WPA2.
• Photograph the Device Access Code sticker and store it safely — you'll need it for future changes.
• Keep firmware current — AT&T gateways update automatically, but confirm under the Device status page.

Troubleshooting: I can't reach 192.168.1.254

1. Wrong network. Confirm you're connected to the AT&T gateway directly, not a mesh node or a second router behind it.
2. Behind your own router. If you added a router, your device is on its network — connect to the gateway's own Wi-Fi, or check the inner router's WAN gateway field.
3. HTTP vs HTTPS. Use http://192.168.1.254; an HTTPS auto-upgrade will time out.
4. VPN running. Local addresses don't route through a VPN — disconnect it first.
5. Wrong IP. On Windows run ipconfig and read Default Gateway; on macOS check System Settings → Network → Details → TCP/IP.
