What is 192.168.8.1?

192.168.8.1 is a private IPv4 address used as the default admin (gateway) IP on Huawei routers and a large share of mobile WiFi (MiFi) hotspots and travel routers. It lives in the RFC 1918 private range, so it is only reachable from a device connected to that hotspot — never from the public internet. Opening it loads the device's management page, where you set the WiFi name and password, check your data balance, manage connected devices, and read signal strength.

Which devices use 192.168.8.1

Some Huawei devices also respond to the friendly hostname http://homerouter.cpe, which loads the same page if the numeric IP doesn't work.

How to log in to 192.168.8.1 — step by step

1. Connect to the hotspot's WiFi (or plug in by USB/Ethernet for home models). The WiFi name and key are printed on the device label or inside the battery cover.
2. On a phone, turn off mobile data first. This is the most common reason the page won't load — see the warning below.
3. Open a browser and type http://192.168.8.1 in the address bar, not the search box. Use http://, not https.
4. Enter the admin password — usually admin or the password on the device label. Many models make you set a new password on first login.
5. Manage your device: change the WiFi name/password, view the data counter, see connected devices, or read mobile signal (RSRP/RSRQ) and band info.

The mobile-data trap (read this first)

When you connect a phone to a MiFi hotspot, the phone notices the hotspot has "no internet" during setup and may silently switch back to mobile data — taking you off the hotspot's network, so 192.168.8.1 can't be reached. The fix: turn off mobile data on your phone, reconnect to the hotspot's WiFi, then open the page. On Android, also disable "automatically switch to mobile data" for that network. Re-enable mobile data when you're done.

"192.168.8.1 not working" — fixes

• Phone fell back to mobile data: Disable mobile data, reconnect to the hotspot, retry (see above).
• Wrong address: Try http://homerouter.cpe on Huawei units, or check the label — a few models use 192.168.1.1.
• Use http, not https: The admin page is served over plain HTTP; an HTTPS auto-redirect will fail.
• Use the app instead: HUAWEI AI Life / Mobile WiFi app manages the device without the IP.
• Forgot the password: Hold the reset pinhole 10+ seconds to restore label defaults — this clears your WiFi settings too.
