Beamforming

A Wi-Fi technique that aims the signal at your device rather than spraying it everywhere. By concentrating radio energy where it is actually needed, beamforming squeezes out more range and reliability from the same hardware.

Beamforming is a way for a Wi-Fi router to shape its transmission so that more of the signal travels toward the specific device it is talking to, instead of radiating equally in all directions. A traditional antenna is like a bare lightbulb lighting a whole room; beamforming is like a spotlight that follows the listener. The device receives a stronger, cleaner signal, which translates to better range and steadier speeds — especially near the edges of coverage.

How it works

Beamforming relies on a router having multiple antennas, the same hardware used for MIMO. By transmitting the same signal from each antenna with carefully calculated timing differences, the router makes the radio waves reinforce one another in the direction of the target device and partially cancel elsewhere. The combined wavefront effectively "points" at the device. The router learns where each device is by analysing the signals it receives back, and continuously adjusts as devices move.

Standardisation and support

Early Wi-Fi had proprietary, incompatible beamforming attempts. Standardised, interoperable beamforming arrived with Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) and was refined in Wi-Fi 6. Because it is now part of the standard, it works automatically between any compliant router and device — both ends generally need to be reasonably modern to benefit, but you do not configure anything. On most current routers it is enabled by default and there is no reason to switch it off.

Beamforming, MIMO, and MU-MIMO

These features share antennas but play different roles. MIMO sends multiple data streams in parallel to boost raw throughput. Beamforming focuses the signal to strengthen a link. MU-MIMO serves several devices simultaneously rather than one at a time. Modern Wi-Fi blends all three: a router can beamform a focused signal to multiple devices at once via MU-MIMO while each link carries multiple MIMO streams. Together they are a big part of why a Wi-Fi 6 network handles a crowded home far better than older gear — though none of them overcomes a genuinely weak signal that better placement or an access point would solve.
