Modem Blinking Lights: What Each Pattern Means

Run a Speed Test

Your modem is the device that actually connects to your ISP — the router just distributes that connection to your devices. When the internet breaks, the modem's lights are usually where the diagnosis starts. Here is what each blink pattern means on cable, DSL, and fiber modems, plus the exact fix for the most common error patterns.

The Four Lights Every Cable Modem Has

LightWhat it monitors
PowerModem has electricity and has booted
Downstream / DS / ReceiveModem is receiving signal from ISP
Upstream / US / SendModem can transmit back to ISP
Online / InternetISP has authenticated your modem and issued an IP address

Some modems add Link (Ethernet to router), Tel/Phone (for VoIP models), and Battery (for modems with backup).

Universal Blink Pattern Code

  • Solid: That function is locked and stable — good
  • Slow blink: That function is in progress — modem is searching, negotiating, or authenticating
  • Fast blink: Active data traffic (normal for Online light)
  • Off: Function is not working, not in use, or hardware failure

The Correct Boot Sequence (Know What "Normal" Looks Like)

  1. Plug in modem — Power turns on within seconds
  2. After ~30 seconds, Downstream blinks (searching for signal), then goes solid once locked
  3. Upstream blinks next (handshaking with ISP), then solid
  4. Online blinks while authenticating, then solid once internet is provisioned
  5. All four lights solid (Online may blink with traffic) = ready

Full boot takes 1-5 minutes on most cable modems. If any light never goes solid, that's where the problem is.

Which Blinking Light Means What

Downstream Blinking (Never Goes Solid)

The modem cannot find a usable signal from the ISP. Causes:

  • Coax cable loose, damaged, or splitter in the line
  • Outage on the ISP's side
  • Drop from the pole to your house has been cut or degraded
  • Modem firmware crash — power cycle fixes this 80% of the time

Fix: Tighten the coax cable at both ends. Remove any splitters. Power cycle the modem (unplug 30 seconds). If it still blinks, check for a service outage or call your ISP.

Upstream Blinking (Downstream Solid)

Modem can receive from the ISP but can't talk back. Causes:

  • Weak upstream signal — line noise or attenuation
  • CMTS (ISP's receiving equipment) overloaded
  • Coax issue specifically affecting the upstream band

Fix: Power cycle, remove splitters, tighten connections. If it persists, it's almost always a line problem that requires an ISP technician.

Online Blinking (Never Goes Solid)

Signal is good but the modem can't authenticate with the ISP. Causes:

  • ISP account issue (past-due bill, service suspended)
  • Modem MAC address not registered with the ISP (common after buying a new modem)
  • Temporary ISP provisioning glitch

Fix: Check your ISP account status. If you just bought the modem, you usually need to activate it — most ISPs have a web activation page (xfinity.com/activate, att.com/activate, cox.com/activate). Call ISP if account is in good standing but still not authenticating.

Power Off or Blinking, Nothing Else Lit

Hardware or power supply problem. Try:

  • Different power outlet
  • Swap the power adapter if you have a compatible spare
  • If modem is 5+ years old, it may be dying — request a replacement from the ISP

Brand-Specific Light Patterns

Motorola / Arris (most Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox modems)

USSolid greenSingle upstream locked

Xfinity xFi Gateway (combo)

The xFi gateway combines modem and router into one device. See the light code in our router lights guide — the Xfinity section applies to both modem and router functions.

Netgear Cable Modems (CM600, CM1000, CM2000)

Very similar to Arris: solid green = single channel locked, solid blue = bonded. Fast blink on Online = data activity (expected).

ATT U-verse / Fiber BGW320 and BGW210

  • Service light green — good
  • Service light red — no sync with ATT network; coax, fiber, or DSL issue
  • Broadband light green — synced
  • Broadband light red — no WAN signal

Verizon Fios ONT

The ONT is the fiber box, usually in the garage or basement. Two lights matter:

  • Power — solid green
  • Optical signal — solid green (the fiber is lit). Red means no fiber signal — only a Verizon tech can fix.

Starlink Dish

The Starlink terminal itself has no status lights. Status is in the app: Online, Obstructed, Searching, Offline: Cable, etc.

The Universal Fix Order

  1. Check every light — identify which is blinking or off
  2. Reseat the coax / fiber / DSL cable
  3. Remove any splitters in the line between the wall and modem
  4. Power cycle: unplug modem for 30 seconds, plug back in, wait 2-3 minutes for full boot
  5. If modem is combo (modem + router), power cycle router separately after the modem is stable
  6. Check ISP outage page or app
  7. Call ISP if downstream/upstream never locks

When to Replace the Modem

Modems typically last 5-7 years before the RF front-end degrades. Signs yours is failing:

  • Lights randomly cycle through boot sequence during normal use
  • Downstream signal strength / SNR numbers on the modem's diagnostics page are marginal
  • You've had to power cycle weekly or daily
  • Speeds are far below plan even on Ethernet

If you rent from the ISP, request a replacement. If you own (to save the rental fee), the best modem for Xfinity and best modem for Spectrum guides cover current picks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a blinking orange light on my modem mean?

Blinking orange or amber usually means the modem is trying to establish a connection but hasn't succeeded yet. Give it 5 minutes. If it doesn't go solid, power cycle and check for an outage. Persistent blinking often means a line-quality issue that requires an ISP technician.

Why is the Online or Internet light not on?

Downstream and Upstream lights need to be solid first. If those are good but Online is off or blinking, the ISP hasn't authenticated your modem. Common causes: account suspension, new modem not activated, or temporary ISP provisioning issue.

How long should a modem take to boot?

Cable modems take 1-5 minutes to reach full online state after power-up. DSL modems take 30-60 seconds. Fiber ONTs typically come online within 30 seconds. If boot takes noticeably longer than that, there's usually a signal issue.
