Internet Tethering
Borrowing one device's internet for another — usually a laptop riding on a phone's mobile data. There are three ways to do it, and which you pick changes the speed, the battery cost, and how many devices you can share with.
Tethering is the act of sharing one device's internet connection with another. The classic case is a phone with mobile data lending that connection to a laptop with none. Tethering is the umbrella term; the mobile hotspot you may have used is just its Wi-Fi flavour. There are three methods in total, and they trade off differently.

When to use each
USB tethering is the unsung hero: plug the phone into the laptop and you get the fastest, most stable link and the phone charges instead of draining. It is the right choice for serious work on a single machine. Wi-Fi tethering (the hotspot) is the most flexible when you need to connect several devices, at the cost of heavy battery use. Bluetooth tethering is slow but sips power, suitable for checking email on the move when you want to preserve the phone's charge.
The data cost
Tethering consumes your mobile data, and a tethered laptop can burn through it far faster than phone use — desktop sites are heavier, software updates download in full, and video defaults to higher resolutions. Crucially, many carriers meter tethered traffic separately from on-device data and may throttle it after a set allowance, even on plans marketed as unlimited. Before relying on tethering for heavy work, check your plan's specific hotspot/tethering allowance.
Tethering as a backup connection
Beyond travel, tethering is a valuable fallback when home broadband fails. Keeping a phone ready to tether — ideally over USB for stability — means a router outage does not have to stop urgent work. For anyone who depends on a connection, a quick tethering setup tested in advance turns an internet outage from a crisis into a minor inconvenience, bridging the gap until the main line returns.
