Latency vs Throughput
Delay versus Data Rate
The two numbers that decide how fast a connection feels — and they are not the same thing. Latency is how long you wait; throughput is how much arrives. A gigabit line with high latency can still feel sluggish.
People say "fast internet" as if it were one thing, but it is really two independent properties. Latency is the delay — how long before data starts arriving, measured in milliseconds. Throughput is the volume — how much data moves per second, measured in Mbps. One is about responsiveness; the other is about capacity. You can have either without the other, which is why a connection can post a huge speed-test number yet still feel slow.
The highway analogy
Picture a road between two cities. Latency is how long one car takes to drive the distance. Throughput is how many cars arrive per minute. A wider road (more lanes) lets more cars arrive at once — higher throughput — but it does not make any single car arrive sooner; that is fixed by the distance and speed limit. Adding lanes never shortens the drive. This is exactly why upgrading from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps makes big downloads finish faster but does nothing for the lag in a video call.
Why they are independent

Satellite is the clearest example: it can deliver plenty of megabits, but the long trip to orbit and back adds hundreds of milliseconds of latency, so the connection feels unresponsive no matter how high the throughput.
Which one your activity needs
- Throughput-bound: large downloads, cloud backups, 4K streaming, game installs — more Mbps genuinely finishes them faster.
- Latency-bound: online gaming, video calls, and the feel of web browsing — these send little data but need it to arrive quickly and consistently. Jitter (variation in latency) hurts these too.
Most "my internet feels slow despite a fast plan" complaints are latency or jitter problems, not throughput shortfalls.
Why a speed test shows both
This is why a proper speed test reports download and upload (throughput) and ping and jitter (latency), rather than a single "speed." Reading only the big Mbps figure misses half the story. If your download number is high but ping is poor, the connection will disappoint at exactly the things people care about most — calls, games, and instant-feeling pages. Judging a connection means looking at both axes together, not just the headline bandwidth.
