Last-Mile Connection
The final stretch of network between your provider and your front door. It is the most expensive part of the whole chain to build — and the part that, more than any other, decides how fast your internet actually is.
The last mile is the final segment of a network: the link from the provider's nearest aggregation point — a street cabinet, a cable node, or a telephone exchange — into your home. Everything beyond that point, the vast core of the internet, has near-limitless capacity. The last mile is where data leaves the fast shared highways and travels down the small road to your specific address, and it is almost always where the bottleneck lives.

The medium sets the ceiling
Because the last mile is the bottleneck, the technology used for that final link largely determines your speed and latency:
- Fiber to the home: the fastest and lowest-latency last mile, with symmetric multi-gigabit potential.
- Coaxial cable: fast downloads, more limited uploads, shared among neighbours on the local node.
- Copper (DSL): speed falls off sharply with distance from the exchange.
- Fixed wireless / 5G: a radio last mile, avoiding the cost of running cable to each home.
- Satellite: a last mile from space, useful where no wired option reaches.
This is why two neighbours with the same provider can get very different results — what physically reaches each door is not the same.
Why it is the expensive part
Upgrading the core network means swapping equipment at a handful of well-connected sites. Upgrading the last mile means building a connection to every single home — trenching streets, pulling fiber, obtaining permits, and sending crews door to door. That per-premises cost does not benefit from the same economies of scale, which is why last-mile fiber rollouts take years and why older copper and cable persist in many areas long after the backbone has been modernised. The phrase "last-mile problem" captures exactly this: the final stretch is disproportionately hard and costly relative to its length.
Last mile vs backhaul vs in-home
It helps to separate three things people often blur together. Backhaul is the provider's link from your local node back toward the core — if it is undersized, your whole neighbourhood slows at peak times. The last mile is the link from that node to your home specifically. And your in-home network — router and Wi-Fi — is everything past the wall. A slow speed test could come from any of the three, which is why diagnosing internet problems starts with figuring out which segment is actually responsible.
