Device Firmware
The software baked into your router, modem, and gadgets that makes them work. You rarely think about it — until an out-of-date version causes dropouts, opens a security hole, or a manufacturer update quietly fixes a long-running problem.
Firmware is the low-level software embedded in a hardware device that controls how it operates. Your router's firmware is, in effect, its operating system: it runs the Wi-Fi radios, the routing logic, the firewall, and the admin page you log into. Unlike an app you install, firmware ships with the device — but it is not frozen. Manufacturers release updates to fix bugs, close security holes, and sometimes add features or improve performance.
Why firmware updates matter

Security is the headline reason
Of all the reasons to update, security is the most pressing. A home router sits at the edge of your network, exposed to the internet, which makes it a favourite target. Researchers and attackers regularly find vulnerabilities, and firmware updates are how those holes get patched. A router running years-old firmware can be quietly compromised and used to snoop on traffic or join a botnet. Keeping firmware current is one of the highest-impact, lowest-effort things you can do for home network security.
How updates happen
Most routers sold in recent years update automatically or prompt you in their app — the modern default, and worth leaving enabled. Older routers require a manual check: log into the admin panel, find the firmware or system section, and look for an update option. A few notes:
- Do not interrupt power during a firmware update — a half-written update can brick the device.
- After a major update, a reboot and occasionally a factory reset clears up odd behaviour.
- If a manufacturer has stopped releasing updates for an old router, that is a strong signal it is time to replace it for security reasons.
Custom firmware
For supported routers, enthusiasts can replace the stock firmware with third-party projects such as OpenWrt or DD-WRT. Custom firmware can unlock advanced controls, finer QoS, VPN servers, and — importantly — continued security updates after a manufacturer abandons a model. The trade-offs are real: it is more complex, can brick a device if flashed incorrectly, and usually voids the warranty. It is a great option for tinkerers and a poor one for anyone who just wants their network to work, where keeping the official firmware current is the right move.
