Discord Internet Speed Requirements

Run a Speed Test

Discord is one of the most bandwidth-efficient communication tools available. Voice chat uses under 1 Mbps. Text and messaging use almost nothing. The only parts of Discord that require meaningful bandwidth are video calls, screen sharing, and Go Live streaming. If Discord is cutting out or lagging, bandwidth is almost never the cause — latency and packet loss are.

Why Discord Cuts Out Even with Fast Internet

If your download speed is 100+ Mbps and Discord is still cutting out, dropping audio, or lagging, the cause is almost certainly one of these:

  • Packet loss. Even 1–2% packet loss causes audio dropouts in voice calls. Discord's audio uses UDP packets — any lost packet means a gap in audio. Run a speed test that shows packet loss to check.
  • Jitter. Variable latency (jitter) causes audio stutter and robotic-sounding voices. If your jitter is above 10–15ms, voice calls will be noticeably worse even with plenty of bandwidth.
  • Bufferbloat during gaming. When your game is downloading content and filling the connection's buffer, Discord's audio packets get delayed in the queue. This causes the characteristic "audio cuts out when I'm in a big fight" problem.
  • Wi-Fi interference. Wi-Fi dropouts cause momentary packet loss that Discord is very sensitive to. Switch to Ethernet if Discord quality is important to you.
  • Discord server region. If you're connecting to a voice server in a distant region, your ping to Discord's servers may be high enough to cause latency. Change the server's voice region in Discord server settings.

What Internet Speed Is Needed for Discord Video Calls?

Discord video calls consume bandwidth proportional to the number of participants and the quality settings:

  • A 1-on-1 video call at 720p uses about 0.5–2.5 Mbps upload and download each
  • A group video call with 5 people visible uses approximately 5–10 Mbps download total
  • 1080p video (Nitro) with 5 participants can use 10–25 Mbps download

Even at these levels, Discord is far less bandwidth-intensive than Zoom or Teams with the same number of participants.

Discord Go Live: Upload Speed Is What Matters

Go Live streaming (sharing your screen or game to Discord voice channels) is entirely upload-dependent. Your download speed is irrelevant for Go Live. What you need:

  • 720p 30fps: 3–8 Mbps upload
  • 1080p 30fps (Nitro): 5–10 Mbps upload
  • 1080p 60fps (Nitro): 8–15 Mbps upload

Cable internet plans often provide 10–20 Mbps upload, which is sufficient for 720p but can be tight for 1080p60 while also gaming. If Go Live quality is choppy, your upload bandwidth is likely the constraint.

How to Fix Discord Voice Quality Issues

  1. Switch to Ethernet. Eliminates Wi-Fi-induced packet loss and jitter immediately.
  2. Enable QoS on your router. Prioritizes Discord's UDP packets over background downloads, eliminating bufferbloat-induced cutouts.
  3. Change the Discord voice server region. In server settings → Overview → Server Region — choose the region geographically closest to you.
  4. Disable Discord's hardware acceleration. User Settings → Advanced → Hardware Acceleration — turning this off can reduce audio glitches on some systems.
  5. Check Discord voice settings. User Settings → Voice & Video — try different input/output modes and adjust noise suppression settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much internet speed does Discord need?

Voice: under 1 Mbps. Video: 0.5–5 Mbps per person. Screen sharing: 1–4 Mbps upload. Go Live: 3–10 Mbps upload. Discord is extremely bandwidth-efficient.

Why is my Discord lagging even though I have fast internet?

Bandwidth is rarely the cause. Discord lag is almost always caused by packet loss, jitter, bufferbloat during gaming, or connecting to a distant Discord voice server region.

What internet speed do I need for Discord Go Live?

3–8 Mbps upload for 720p30. 5–10 Mbps upload for 1080p30 (Nitro). Upload speed, not download, is what matters for Go Live.

Does Discord work on slow internet?

Voice chat works on under 1 Mbps. Text works on any connection. Only screen sharing and Go Live streaming require faster connections, particularly for upload speed.

Why does my Discord cut out when I game?

Bufferbloat — game download traffic saturates your connection's buffer, delaying Discord's audio packets. Enable QoS on your router to prioritize Discord traffic and eliminate this problem.
